The Austrian Mint is one of the world’s most well-known mints, with its beginnings traced back all the way to 1194. At that time, Richard the Lionheart was being held prisoner by Duke Leopold V, presumable for insulting the Duke inappropriately. His ransom was 15 tonnes of silver, which Leopold promptly decided to use to create coins.
From that point, the Austrian Mint has produced a variety of coins, including the popular Austrian Philharmonic coin.
