In 2009, the U.S. Mint created the $1 Silver Louis Braille Commemorative to honor the 200th birthday of Louis Braille.

Braille was born in France in 1809. He was blinded in one eye at the age of 3 after an accident in his fathers shop. As an adult, Braille was an educator and inventor, developing and reading and writing system for use by people who are visually impaired.

  • The obverse design features the front facing bust of Louis Braille, and is inscribed with the words 'LIBERTY, LOUIS BRAILLE, IN GOD WE TRUST' and the years 1809 and 2009
  • The reverse design features and young child reading a Braille book, with raised Braille writing above. There is a bookcase in the background with the word 'Independence"
